Once a month, Athens comes out.
Smokers lounge on the patio, hopping through conversations, while inside patrons at the bar watch a younger crowd dance to the sounds of Madonna, Lady Gaga and Dierks Bentley. Near midnight, moving from one end of the small venue to the other becomes impossible. In the space of a few hours, Georgia Exclude is transformed into GA(Y) Bar.
“It has blown me away,” said Joshua Barnett, a senior communications major and production manager at The Red & Jet who helped organize the event. “I never consideration we would have a line out the door on a Tuesday late hours. Within five minutes I’m talking to my juvenile 21-year-old friends who are just coming out, and the next I’m talking to a middle-aged queenly queen and another moment I’m talking to a 75-year-old person in the community.”

Annette Hatton has lived in Athens for 32 years, the last 15 spent as an unclosed member and chief in the city’s lesbian community.
Though never a regular on the Athens block scene, Hatton linked the city’s gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders in heralding the opening of Boneshakers, Athens’ only gay bar, 12 years ago.
Last month, she joined them in mourning its departure, not for the loss of drinks and dancing but for a symbolic common territory for the male lover community.
“Boneshakers really did fill a place when it came out — a place for people to be there, know each other and not worry,” said Hatton, the managing editor of the “Georgia Review” and founder of GLOBES, Gay, Woman loving woman Or Bisexual Employees and Supporters.
However, the bar’s doors closed for the last time on a different Athens than the one that witnessed its opening 12 years ago.
Boneshakers’ original co-owner, Greg Martin, said with several bars to a street block today, it is difficult for current students to conceive Athens with only the handful of downtown hotspots present back in 1993.
