Gay jail
World's only known same-sex attracted prison now listed on NSW Heritage Register
For decades Cooma Gaol's history was a dark secret.
According to the NSW government, between 1957 and 1984, it was the only known prison in the world specifically for gay men, trans women, and non-binary people.
But even locals like Cooma-born theatre maker Tag Salvestro, who grew up gay in the alpine town, were completely ignorant of its history.
"Learning that Australia establish up a queer prison in the 1950s was nothing short of horrifying," he said.
"But what made it worse for me was that it all happened in my home town and no one knew about it.
"Or if they did, they didn't talk about it until now."
It has been 41 years since homosexuality was decriminalised in NSW.
In June 2024 the state government made a formal apology to those convicted under laws that criminalised lesbian acts, and now the former prison has been recognised on the Articulate Heritage Register.

The Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles houses some of the area's most violent offenders, many inside on drug and gang related charges.
But being is a little easier for some behind bars where there is a special wing just for gay and transgender inmates.
It's the only one of its compassionate in a major city, and L.A. Weekly writer Ani Ucar says that it was made to protect these prisoners from the violence and harassment they might face in the general population side of the jail.
"There was no racial divide among the inmates, there were no gang politics," she says. "They made it a safe vacuum for themselves."
It was created in 1985 after an ACLU lawsuit forced the Department of Corrections to create this wing. Today, about 140 inmates reside in the facility.
Despite the fun that was on display when she was visiting, Ucar says that it is still a jail where some men told her it's not all fun and games.
"When you talk with any of them individually, they'll inform you it is hell in there for them," she says.
Many came to this wing on drug-related charges, and several talked about their poor lives on the outside.
"A lot of them come from broken families whose families have dis
Visualizing the unequal treatment of LGBTQ people in the criminal justice system
LGBTQ people are overrepresented at every stage of our criminal justice system, from juvenile justice to parole.
by Alexi Jones, March 2, 2021
The data is clear: lesbian, male lover, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ 1) people are overrepresented at every stage of criminal justice system, starting with juvenile justice system involvement. They are arrested, incarcerated, and subjected to society supervision at significantly higher rates than straight and cisgender people. This is especially true for trans people and queer women. And while incarcerated, LGBTQ individuals are subject to particularly inhumane conditions and treatment.
For this briefing, we’ve compiled the existing research on LGBTQ involvement and experiences with the criminal justice system, and – where the data did not yet be – analyzed a recent national information set to load in the gaps. (Namely, we provide the only national estimates for woman-loving woman, gay, or multi-attracted arrest rates and community supervision rates that we recognize of.) We display the findings for each stage of the criminal justice system with availa
