 As you obtain older it’s not unusual to use more time on your own, particularly if you’ve missing loved ones or your health isn’t what it used to be.

Following the success of our call companions service, we launched rainbow call companions: a free telephone befriending service for LGBT+ people who are lonely, isolated or in need of companionship and touch they would advantage from a kind phone call every week or two. This is a service specifically for lesbian, gay, pansexual, transgender plus (LGBT+) people aged 75+ who would like to speak to someone who’s also LGBT+. 

Calls last for half an hour or so and you can chat about anything that interests you. What's fantastic is that the same volunteer phones you every period, so you can get to understand each other and share stories and laughter – for as long as you both want.

Rainbow summon companions has been awarded by the NHS National Advisor for LGBT Health award (2022), which recognises outstanding perform by individuals and groups across the NHS and VCSE sector to develop the experience of LGBT+ patients and the LGBT+ workforce and shine a light on examples of best practice.

New wave of homophobic attacks targets users of lgbtq+ dating apps like Grindr

Josh is lying on a footpath, curled up into a ball, his chief covered with his hands as three men lay into him with metal bars.

"Am I going to make it out of here alive?" he remembered thinking. "What's going to happen?"

He managed to acquire up but stumbled a few times after receiving blows to his head.

The men were laughing at him. One of them was filming.

"They were calling me a paedophile," Josh, whose name has been changed to protect his identity, told 7.30.

Josh was so badly beaten he almost ended up in intensive care.

"Apparently I had lost so much blood that my blood pressure had dropped so shallow they were considering taking me to ICU."

It was spring 2024 in Melbourne's bayside suburbs. Josh's Saturday night had turned into the early hours of Sunday morning. Like many men on the hook-up app Grindr, he had been "looking".

Josh, now in his 30s, has used Grindr since he was 18.

He started chatting to a user whose profile had three face pics, unlike the others, and "filled-out" details.
