With big, passionate ballads like You’re Beautiful and Goodbye My Lover, singer James Blunt has sold over 20 million albums and 17 million singles worldwide.

But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t had his give of critics who think he’s not a man’s man.

‘I sing songs that aren’t very macho and so people will say, ‘oh you’re effeminate,’ or ‘gay’ as if calling me queer were an insult,’ he tells the BBC.

He goes on to say: ‘But to call me ‘gay’ is a compliment and I would like to be considered an honorary gay dude because I’m totally at ease with myself. And I suppose I’ve written songs that are sensitive because I wouldn’t normally portray those emotions in everyday life.’

And for the record, the five-time Grammy nominee is married to Sofia Wellesley and the couple are currently expecting their first child.

He was also a captain in the British Army and served as an armored reconnaissance officer in the NATO deployment in Kosovo.

James Blunt has been criticized by lgbtq+ rights campaigners for making a joke about male rape on Twitter.com.

The You're Beautiful hitmaker common the front cover of New Statesman magazine, which featured an illustration of Blunt drinking with other "posh" common figures including Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and British Prime Minister David Cameron to accompany an article about class and privilege.

Blunt-edged then added a prison rape joke, writing, "I won't be picking up the soap when this party moves to the showers".

His quip has angered bosses at gay rights organization Stonewall, and a spokesman tells Britain's Daily Mail newspaper, "Although James might have been joking, it's this sort of language that perpetuates negative stereotypes around gay men and gets deemed as acceptable as it becomes ingrained in society."

Earlier this month (Jan15), Blunt became embroiled in a class row with a British politician who claimed those from "posh" backgrounds contain an easier employment getting into the arts.
