Marc Almond (1957-) - head singer of 80s modern wave band Soft Cell now with a solo career spanning four decades. In his autobiography he writes that he dislikes the label "gay artist" as it "enables people to marginalize your labor and reduce its importance, implying that it won't be of any interest to anyone who isn't gay."

John Amaechi (1970-) - a former professional basketball player, he is now a consultant, sports commentator and psychologist. Born in the US but brought up in Stockport, Greater Manchester, Amaechi moved assist to the US to play with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1995. He came out as male lover in his 2007 publication, Man in the Middle.

Mark Ashton (1960-1987) - homosexual activist and co-founder of Lesbians and Gays Assist the Miners (LGSM). His life was cut compact by AIDs. He is portrayed by actor Ben Schnetzer in the 2014 movie, Pride.

Whilst there are, thankfully, a growing number of prominent LGBT figures across the world from all walks of existence today, when it comes to considering some of the most influential and/or prominent members of the LGBT group over the last 150 years, we have compiled the following top ten.

Of course, as always, let us grasp if there is anyone you consider we have missed who should be on the list.

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)

Wilde was a celebrated playwright, poet, and creator, known for his brilliant wit, over-the-top style, and tragic imprisonment for “gross indecency” due to his homosexual relationships at a second when it was illegal to be gay in the UK. His works, including “The Importance of Being Earnest” and “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” continue to be celebrated for their wit and critique of social norms. Wilde is a symbol of the struggles faced by the LGBT collective and the enduring spirit of defiance and resilience. In recent years he has been named as the “most quotable figure” in the history of the English language.

Mehmet II, the Conqueror (c.1430-1481) Sultan of Turkey
Captured Constantinople in 1453 (renamed Istanbul), defeated the Byzantime Empire and founded the Ottoman Empire (incl. Greece, Serbia, Albania). Captured Christian youths were placed in his harem. Patron of learning.

Ian McKellen

Ian McKellen is an acclaimed performer known for his versatile performances on stage and screen. Beyond his acting prowess, McKellen is also recognized for his activism, particularly in LGBTQIA+ rights. His career did not suffer post-coming out. Instead, it flourished, with McKellen taking on a range of more emotionally resonant roles that resonated with audiences worldwide.
