This ‘Sweet Magnolias’ Twist Just Fixed the Show's Most Awkward Problem
Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Season 5 of Sweet Magnolias.
As Sweet Magnoliasexplores the lives of three close friends as they help each other through experience and work to improve their close-knit community, the Netflix series does not shy away from complex dynamics. The show has explored Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) becoming friends with her ex-husband's affair partner, Noreen (Jamie Lynn Spears), Dana Sue's (Brooke Elliott) difficult partnership with her sister-in-law Kathy (Wynn Everett), and the Townsend children adjusting to Cal (Justin Bruening) as their stepfather just as their father dies. These moments provide some of the most interesting and earnest storylines in the series and display the drama of a small town where everyone seems to know each other. Yet, as Sweet Magnolias brings different people together, one relationship has been just a little too weird for comfort.
Throughout the series, Noreen develops a friendship with Isaac (Chris Medlin), and on the surface, it is sweet. These two should make the perfect friends, especially as both touch like outsider
Sweet Magnolias Season 4 Finally Confirmed One Character's Sexuality, And I Think The Showrunner's Explanation Makes Total Sense
The 2025 TV schedule delivered a lovely winter treat when Sweet Magnolias Season 4 became one of this year’s new Netflix movie and TV show releases in early February. Anyone who maybe didn’t love Season 3 was rewarded for coming endorse to Serenity, South Carolina, as the finale gave viewers a major Maddie-related surprise for Dana Sue and Helen going forward, but the season, overall, also finally saw one character’s sexuality be confirmed, and I totally fetch the showrunner’s reason for revealing it now.
What Did Lovely Magnolias’ Showrunner Speak About Confirming That Big Character’s Sexuality?
Probably, like many fans, I was hoping that Sweet Magnolias Season 4 would seriously deliver in several areas, but, one thing I didn’t even examine was the story finally confirming that Isaac (Chris Medlin) is a member of the Diverse community. The miniature town drama, of course, had advocacy on that front since Season 1 with Trotter and his husband, Ashley, but we hadn’t gotten the opportunity to
“He wasn’t interested in dating”: Sweet Magnolias showrunner explains why Isaac’s sexuality wasn’t revealed until season 4
Sweet Magnolias Season 4 has included a long-awaited plot as Isaac, played by Chris Medlin, finally gets a love interest. The Netflix romantic drama takes place in the make-believe town of Serenity, South Carolina, and tells the stories of townspeople whose lives are intertwined in one way or the other.
Isaac is introduced in season 1 as a chef at Dana Sue’s restaurant, Sullivan's. His parentage is integral to the plot in all four seasons as the lad moves to Serenity to find his biological parents.
However, his love life never comes to the forefront, until season 4, when he finally meets Michael, and sparks fly between the two. This plot also addresses Isaac’s sexuality, revealing he is gay.
Sweet Magnoliasshowrunner, Sheryl J. Anderson, has opened up about what took them so long to reveal Isaac’s sexuality in the present. Anderson said Isaac was not romantically involved with anyone for three seasons, as he was still getting comfortable with who he was.

Chris grew up in the mountains of East Tennessee, where there weren’t a ton of artistic outlets. But did that stop him? Nope. He found his own way—singing, dancing, and yes, even pretending to be a Power Ranger. The hustle started early too—when he was in third grade, he literally walked himself back to school just to audition for the choir. And that energy? Still going strong.
