Illinois Supreme Court overturns Jussie Smollett conviction for alleged hoax
Smollett was sentenced to 150 days in jail, but served only six days before he was freed pending appeal.
The state Supreme Court sided with Smollett's attorneys, who argued in their appeal that Smollett should not contain been charged by a special prosecutor after the Bake County State Attorney's Office dropped charges in exchange for community service.
The decision sparked an uproar from many, including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said who said Smollett was "let off scot-free, with no sense of accountability for the moral and ethical false of his actions".
A grand jury later re-established the charges after a particular prosecutor took on the case.
"We are aware that this case has generated significant general interest and that many people were dissatisfied with the resolution of the original case and believed it to be unjust," the state Supreme Court wrote in its opinion on Thursday.

In a candid interview in the latest issue of Out magazine, Empire actor Jussie Smollett discusses his activism and what it was like officially coming out as gay to Ellen DeGeneres last year. The actor then reveals something even more intriguing — that he is open to love, “not to gender.”
“If I had to label myself, I would label myself as a gay male. With that said, I believe that love is the only thing that matters, and I would hope that anybody would leave themselves open – not to gender, but to love. … If we truly believe that we are born this way, then why perform we try to stifle the way we were born?
