This trope is the presentation of deaths of LGBT characters where these characters are nominally competent to be viewed as more expendable than their heterosexual counterparts. In this way, the death is treated as exceptional in its circumstances. In aggregate, gay characters are more likely to die than straight characters. Indeed, it may be because they seem to have less purpose compared to straight characters, or that the supposed natural finding of their story is an early death.
The reasons for this trope have evolved somewhat over the years. For a good while, it was because the Depraved Homosexual trope and its ilk pretty much limited portrayals of explicitly gay characters to villainous characters, or at least characters

Which countries impose the death penalty on gay people?
Around the world, queer people continue to deal with discrimination, violence, harassment and social stigma. While social movements have marked progress towards acceptance in many countries, in others homosexuality continues to be outlawed and penalised, sometimes with death.
According to Statistica Research Department, as of 2024, homosexuality is criminalised in 64 countries globally, with most of these nations situated in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. In 12 of these countries, the death penalty is either enforced or remains a possibility for private, consensual queer sexual activity.
In many cases, the laws only apply to sexual relations between two men, but 38 countries acquire amendments that include those between women in their definitions.
These penalisations represent abuses of human rights, especially the rights to freedom of verbalization, the right to develop one's retain personality and the right to life.
